Missioning Retreats – New Locales
Kolbe Prison Ministries has extended its reach beyond Texas, now operating in Louisiana, Florida, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Catholic leaders from other states have also shown interest, and their inquiries are currently under review. Before KPM commits to conducting a “missioning” retreat in a new state or diocese, several initial requirements must be met, as outlined below:
- Identify a primary local organizer/contact and communicate the Board’s expectations and needs.
- Obtain written approval from the bishop of the corresponding diocese to bring KPM to the prisons in his diocese.
- Establish a local KPM “Core Team” with at least 3 initial members who will fill the roles of President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The new Core Team will need to confirm compliance with: KPM’s Core Team Operating Guide, Handbook, and Retreat Director’s Guide, and will need to execute the KPM Core Team Affiliation Agreement.
In addition to the initial requirements, there are several more steps necessary for planning and scheduling a missioning retreat. These include:
- Completing any necessary filing requirements with state authorities.
- Determining the new Core Team’s financial and banking arrangements.
- Identifying one or more potential incarceration facilities where a missioning retreat may be held.
- Communicating with the Department of Corrections officials about holding a KPM retreat in such potential units.
- Soliciting local volunteers for the initial Retreat Team and for other Core Team support roles.
- Developing and executing a plan for local fundraising to purchase retreat-related equipment and supplies.
As you can see, organizing a missioning retreat involves much more than just making a request. It is important that local leaders take ownership of the KPM ministry in their area and contribute funding toward acquiring retreat inventory items.
Catholic lay or church leaders interested in bringing a KPM missioning retreat to their diocese should contact the KPM Board using the following contact form.
