CCLI Music License & Reporting
KPM entered into a license agreement in August 2023 with Christian Copyright Licensing International (“CCLI”)
for the legal limited use and reproduction of certain copyrighted songs. The license KPM has is a “Church Copyright License.” CCLI defines a church as: ‘A distinct group of Christian worshippers congregating at a particular location.’ Under this definition, KPM qualifies as a ‘church.’
CCLI licenses are required if copyright-protected resources are reproduced, photocopied, printed, projected from electronic song databases or OHP slides, performed, or audio/video recorded during the course of, or in preparation for, activities undertaken by the church (i.e. KPM). The coverage of the Church Copyright License agreement includes the KPM Core Teams (as affiliates) provided such Core Teams (and their Retreat Directors) abide by the terms and conditions of the license agreement. Information about what license holders are permitted and not permitted to do is outlined in the Church Copyright License® Manual
The KPM Board and all Core Teams opting to use the CCLI license must abide by the following conditions:
- Report all Song copy activity when required
- Validate each participating song (“Song”) before making a copy
- When reproducing a Song, include the song title, writer credit(s) and copyright notice
- Destroy all copies of Songs made under KPM’s agreement if/when that License expires
Core Teams and their Retreat Directors can search for and validate songs covered by the CCLI license by visiting the SongSelect by CCLI website. SongSelect is a database of Christian songs and song-related data including lyrics, chords, music sheets and more. Core Teams and Retreat Directors (or their music leaders) will only have access to the public database of songs (including song title, song writer(s), and short audio clip). This information will be useful for reporting the songs used or reproduced for retreats. We highly recommend that retreat music leaders and/or song reporters sign up for a “FREE” account with SongSelect. That way you can search for the songs on SongSelect and also find the CCLI song ID number needed for reporting. See the image below for an example (using the song “Redeemed”).
